Chairman of the Integrated Village Cooperative Society in Mawmaram today officially announced his resignation citing ambiguity in the functioning of the Meghalaya Basin Management Agency (MBMA).
According to Fairson Kharjana the MBMA had convinced him to form a producers group and get in 10-20 members to avail a scheme worth Rs 50,000 and Rs 25, 000 for breeding pigs. However, he said it turned out that the scheme is only for Rs 5000.
“When I went to inquire about this from the office they said that the scheme has been altered and they were also not willing to come and clarify this matter to the villagers,” he alleged.
Kharjana also said that the award of Rs 3 lakh given to the society on October 28, 2022 by Chief Minister Conrad Sangma at the State Convention centre turned out to be a loan.
“In October last year, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma handed over a cheque of Rs 3 lakh to me under ‘Meghalaya celebrating entrepreneurship’ at the State Convention Centre. Two weeks later, the Meghalaya Basin Management Agency informed that Rs 3 lakh is a loan and it should be used under the basin instruction and be reimbursed,” he stated.
Kharjana further said that he is now apprehensive that the producers groups would be asked to return the Rs 5000 distributed to them under the FOCUS programme.
