Ri-Bhoi police arrested one person yesterday who was allegedly involved in drug trafficking from Guwahati to Shillong.
According to police sources, a tip-off was received and, acting on this, police began checking vehicles at Umsning during which, at around 8pm, a tourist Sumo (ML 05 S 6642) was intercepted.
One person travelling in the vehicle, Anup Sen, from Laban in Shillong, was detained after he was found to be carrying two soap boxes containing heroin, Rs 10,880 in cash and mobile phone, along with other items.
Sen had reportedly tried to conceal the drugs in a secret compartment in the vehicle but to no avail. The total amount of heroin seized amounted to 22.34 grammes.
A criminal case was registered against Sen and he was formally arrested.
