Scores of supporters assembled in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Shillong as their candidates filed their nomination papers today.
Election fever reached fever pitch on Saturday as the location saw huge crowds throng the area.
A sight that one will not forget and a true example of ‘Festival of Democracy’ was what it looked like.
Flags of different parties flew high. At one point, it looked like chaos was going to erupt since supporters from National People’s Party and United Democratic Party were seen crossing paths. But it was remarkable that all the supporters were on their best behaviour and ensured that it was only the chanting of their party names that rang out loud and clear.
However, the aftermath of such a gathering led to an ugly sight. The area was littered with paper, juice boxes, fruit peels and several other kinds of trash.
The question remains as to why leaders of every party do not try to educate their supporters that they should keep areas in which they congregate clean instead of creating a mess in a busy part of the city.
