The Meghalaya government’s rural livelihood support programmes are creating “sustainable avenues of income” for the largely agrarian population of the state, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said today.

The CM was speaking at the latest in a long line of similar functions where he distributes cheques under the FOCUS+ farmers’ scheme, hands out piglets under the PROGRESS piggery scheme and dishes out financial assistance under the YESS Meghalaya youth organisation scheme. Sangma also gave interest-free loans to weavers, what were described as “tailoring machines” in a press release to tailors and solar tool kits to trainee technicians.

The event took place at Paham, Demdema, in West Garo Hills.

“Meghalaya is an agrarian state; hence the development of the rural economy is our top priority. During the past four and a half years, we have championed several programs on a mission mode to bring about a turnaround,” Sangma said. “Whether it’s through direct fund transfer to farmers, youth, and self-help groups, or through the distribution of livestock among rural households, we are creating sustainable avenues of income for our people and moving towards realizing our vision of doubling farmers income.”
