Border residents of Muktapur situated along the Indo-Bangladesh border in West Jaiñtia Hills district has decided not to grant no-objection certificate for fencing until proper demarcation of the border is carried out.
The decision was taken at a consultative meet held at Muktapur Government L.P School today to discuss on the permission sought from the Satpator Dolloiship Elaka by the district administration to carry out fencing works from border pillar number 1283/7s to number 1301/4s under Muktapur-Jaliakhola.
The meeting was attended by farmers of Muktapur, West Jaiñtia Hills Deputy Commissioner, Batlang S Sohliya and officials, Adviser of the Synjuk ki Waheh Shnong War Jaiñtia, Kolmen Pohshna, Dolloi of Elaka Satpator, Daman Lakashiang, members of the Co-Ordination Committee on International Border (CCIB), Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), Hynñiewtrep National Youth Front (HNYF), the Federation of the Khasi-Jaiñtia and Garo People (FKJGP).
Lakashiang said farmers have proposed that the fencing works should take place right from the zero point and that the NOC cannot be granted until the border is demarcated.
He said that if fencing from 150 yard is allowed, most of the farmlands will go to Bangladesh. Besides farmers will face problems with setting up of entry and exit gates, he added.
The Dolloi is apprehensive that with erection of such gates farmers will face harassment, if they have to go and tend to their fields.
