While the government will seek for an explanation from police ‘Tactical Team-I’, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma today said people should understand that whatever the police was trying to do, was to ensure the safety of the citizens.
The report of the judicial inquiry commission headed by retired Chief Justice T Vaiphei, found that the tactical team-1 was responsible for the death of former HNLC leader Cheristerfield Thangkhiew.
Sangma said the commission has listed its observation and the government will also seek the other side of the story and take appropriate action.
“All the individuals in the team will be called for explanation. Once we hear the other side of the story based on that we will proceed further,” Sangma told reporters.
He said that several IED blasts had taken place throughout the state and therefore the police had to act to ensure the safety of citizens.
The chief minister said that though police officers are well-trained during such operations, one has to understand that they are under a lot of pressure. “They were working under tremendous pressure with very limited time and not knowing what could happen next. So in such situations nothing will go as planned,” he added.
While doubts have been raised why the original report and names of people were not tabled, Sangma said names of the police officers have been omitted based on the recommendations of the commission as it would endanger their personal safety and ongoing investigations of different extortion cases.
