State Congress chief and Shillong MP Vincent Pala has maintained that there is a good chance that the Khasi language will be included in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution.
“We have seen that the Khasi Authors Society has been able to meet most of the requirements and the criteria that Delhi has asked for, so we have a chance but the most important thing is that a bill has to be passed in Parliament,” Pala told Highland Post yesterday.
However, he cautioned further patience as Khasi is in a long queue of other languages also hoping for official recognition in the Constitution.
“I have also spoken about this in Parliament time and again and also included the bill for discussion and now it depends on the government as to when they take up the bill,” he said, adding that resolutions in the Meghalaya Assembly have also been passed by Congress-led governments as well as the current one.
Recently, the Trinamool Congress raised the matter through protests in Delhi as well as in Parliament. Pala, who is still in the national capital for the Lok Sabha session, further said that the more parties that take up the subject the better, be it TMC, NPP or the Congress.
