A resident of Upper Shillong has petitioned Governor Satya Pal Malik to force central government offices in Meghalaya to increase the number of Scheduled Tribe employees in their ranks.
Arju Dkhar wrote to Malik today saying that local tribals are underrepresented in central government offices, such as those in the defence establishment, NEHU, central public sector utilities, financial institutions and banks and other offices.
According to a 2005 office memorandum of the Union Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, 44 per cent of Category C and D jobs should be reserved for the tribal population in Meghalaya.
