The Meghalaya State Legal Service Authority organised a one day health camp-cum-awareness programme on the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) and government welfare schemes under the theme ‘Bridging the Gap’ at Pynthor village in Ri-Bhoi yesterday.
The event was held in collaboration with the Departments of Social Welfare, Health and Family Welfare and Community and Rural Development and District Legal Service Authority of Ri-Bhoi.
The programme was also attended by High Court of Meghalaya judge and MSLSA executive chairman Justice HS Thangkhiew among other dignitaries.
People from four villages, Pynthor, Mynsain, Lum Syntung and Umden Umbathiang, attended.
Different stalls were set up from the Health, Election, Education, Fisheries, Veterinary, Agriculture departments, banks, police, self-help groups, etc.
L Lyngdoh, Assistant Director of Social Welfare spoke on child welfare schemes, the Juvenile Justice Act, drug abuse, child marriage, etc. Other speakers addressed subjects such as the welfare of pregnant women, tuberculosis elimination, leprosy, health insurance and free legal services, among others.
Justice Thangkhiew lauded the initiatives taken by various departments of government in taking part along with the MSLSA for conducting the event. He said that such events enlighten people about various schemes of the government as well as about legal aid provided by NALSA.
The day also included a distribution of materials, such as electric wheelchairs, aluminium crutches and smartphones for the visually impaired.
