The Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) has decided to support the candidature of Draupadi Murmu, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate for President of India, when the election is held later this month.
The HSPDP has only two eligible electors, its two MLAs, Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar and Samlin Malngiang.
Murmu, if elected, will become the first tribal to occupy the highest constitutional office in the country. The National People’s Party (NPP) and United Democratic Party (UDP) have already indicated their support for Murmu.
Meanwhile, the party’s executive committee also discussed Meghalaya’s reservation policy and preparations for the state elections next year.
