PWD (Buildings) Executive Engineer Ransom Sutnga will go on voluntary retirement from service from tomorrow.
This is as per a notification issued by the PWD Secretary T G Nengnong yesterday.
Sutnga had in the recent past landed in a number of controversies.
The Inter-State Bus Terminus (ISBT) at Mawiong, a project which he supervised, had developed several cracks causing leakage of rain water on May 13.
The construction of the new Assembly building at Mawdiangdiang which was also supervised by him has now stopped after the dome collapsed on May 22 triggering massive public outrage.
Sutnga also kicked up a controversy in March this year when he attended a meeting of the NPP where State party president Dr. Wanwei Roy Khalukhi was present.
At the meeting, Dr. Kharlukhi introduced and felicitated Sutnga by putting the scarf with the NPP symbol on his shoulders.
The NPP president also announced that Sutnga would be the party candidate from Shillong North constituency in the 2023 Assembly elections.
According to the Meghalaya Service Conduct Rules 2019, “any government employee cannot participate in any political activities or be part of any political party as long as he or she is in service.”
The matter was also raised in the budget session of the Assembly on March 17 by opposition MLA Zenith Sangma who sought action against Sutnga under the provisions of the service rules.
“Sutnga is still the executive engineer in the PWD (Buildings) and he has not resigned from his post till date but he is holding meetings in political platforms and involved in political activities?” Sangma had said.
In reply, Deputy Chief Minister in-charge PWD (Roads) Prestone Tynsong said, “Necessary action will be taken according to the provisions of the service rules”.
Tynsong had also said that the department has decided to seek an explanation from Sutnga on the matter.
