The Congress Party is preparing a ‘chargesheet’ against the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government for its alleged failure and shortcomings while in power, Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president and Shillong MP Vincent Pala said today.
The charges will be made public once the dates for next year’s state election are announced.
Congress committees have been set up to gather all the relevant information to go into the chargesheet but Pala said that this will include “failure of the government in maintaining law and order, introducing gambling, corruption and non-payment of salaries.
Pala questioned why the government has been determined to bulldoze all opposition in order to legalise gambling in the state despite civil society opposition.
On corruption, he pointed to numerous toll gates run by the state government and district councils that charge levies on trucks and thereby drive up the cost of consumer goods.
“This is corruption but everybody is silent except the Congress, who is pointing at it as everybody is getting a share out of it,” he added.
The economy, on the other hand, is in the doldrums and the government is unable to pay salaries of teachers and health workers while staff in the district councils also suffer, Pala claimed.
“The government is unable to collect revenue due to corruption and instead of funds going into the government exchequer, it goes into personal pockets. We have a research team and we will list all of this in our chargesheet,” he added.
