Hundreds of mid-day meal workers began a hunger strike at the Nongthymmai Sports Club here today for enhancement of honorarium and long pending dues.
The protest was led by the All Jaiñtia Mid Day Meal Worker Union (Central Executive Committee). The union has been demanding an honorarium of Rs 1000 per month, which has not been paid for five months. The honorarium was not paid for the period from November 2021 and April 2022.
Adviser of the union, Khroo L Pariat accused the State government of lying to the Centre. He said while the state government claims that payment of wages to the workers was done monthly through bank account, it was just on paper.
He said that the mid-day meal workers want to know where the money has gone when they only received wages two times a year with a pending of two months every single year.
There are over 14,000 mid-day meal workers in the state.
