Local MDC and 2023 Assembly hopeful Pynshngain Syiem welcomed the entry of Rocky Hek to the race for the Pynthorumkhrah seat in next year’s state elections.
Syiem, the state Congress working president said that the more contestants there are, the better it will be for him.
Last week Rocky sprung a surprise by announcing that he was leaving the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to join the National People’s Party (NPP) and run from Pynthorumkhrah, which has been held by his uncle AL Hek for several terms.
“Anything can happen in politics and, like DD Lapang used to say, in every election think about yourself as a fresh candidate,” Syiem said, adding that he promises to bring development that the senior Hek has not brought for the last 25 years.
Unlike other constituencies, Pynthorumkhrah does not have playgrounds or an indoor sports complex, proper roads, drainage systems, street lights or a health centre, the MDC said.
Syiem also disagreed with the idea that Rocky wants to divide his uncle’s vote bank; he, instead, truly believes himself to be an eligible candidate, the Congressman said.
“All we have to do is work harder in the field to ensure that we come out victorious,” he added.
