In a victory of sorts for activists, the State government will soon repeal the existing Meghalaya Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Act, 2014 and follow the Central statute pertaining to street-vending.
This was informed by State government lawyer P N Nongbri during the hearing in the division bench of Meghalaya High Court today.
Nongbri also informed the High Court that the matter is before the State cabinet which will issue an appropriate ordinance in accordance with law.
He also informed the court that after the State law is repealed, a set of rules in accordance with the Central statute will be brought into effect immediately.
Following the submission by the State government lawyer, the High Court decided to wait for six weeks for the State government to act. The next hearing on the matter will be held on July 1.
It may be mentioned that the Meghalaya and Greater Shillong Progressive Hawkers and Street Vendors Association (MGSPHSVA) has moved the High Court seeking implementation of the Central Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Act, 2014.
