Traffic on the Mawlai By-Pass connecting ISBT Mawiong with Mawlai Mawkynroh has been closed today following the cracks that were detected at the Umshing bridge.
The huge cracks on one side of the bridge have triggered fear among commuters.
Some of the cars that tried to cross the bridge suffered damage to their bumpers and several registration plates were ripped off by the impact.
The PWD authorities today used an excavator to scrape all the bitumen from the surface of the bridge in order to seal off the cracks.
Officials of the PWD (Roads) today visited the site and ordered closure of traffic till the repair work is completed.
The damage to the bridge came a few days after similar cracks were detected at the nearby ISBT building.
The cracks at ISBT have evoked strong reaction from the people even as there is widespread demand for action against the contractor who constructed the building.
