The Khasi Students Union (KSU) has reiterated its opposition to railways in the State and said that the general perception of people that it would bring down price of essential commodities, does not hold water.
Speaking at a meeting of the union in Sajer Nongpoh today, KSU president Lambokstar Marngar said that the union will continue to railway lines in the State as long as the inner line permit is not implemented.
“Many say that railway connectivity should be accepted in Meghalaya since the price of essential commodities will come down. But when you compare with Assam, which is connected by rail, the price is more or less the same like in our State,” he said, adding, “What is the use of procuring essentials at low rates, when our identities will be at stake?”
His statement comes a day the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Railways led by Radha Mohan Singh held a meeting with the officials of the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) and the state government in Shillong to discuss the delay in completing some railway projects in the state.
Marngar said the KSU in 2017 had opposed the proposed railway project at Ronghana, Byrnihat and would continue to do so if the centre and state governments force on Meghalaya.
