Two statutory environment regulatory bodies, the State Environment Impact Assessment Authority (SEIAA) and State Expert Appraisal Committee (SEAC), were notified by the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change vide notification on Friday in the Gazette of India.
TTC Marak, former Principal Chief Conservator of Forests of Meghalaya, has been nominated as chairman of SEIAA and Nababrata Bhattacharjee, former commissioner of the National Green Tribunal, has been nominated as chairman of SEAC.
The members of the SEIAA are HJ Syiemlieh, of Botany Deptt. NEHU & CCF, Social Forestry & Environment, Meghalaya as member secretary. The members of the SEAC comprise MR Sangma, former chief engineer, PWD, Meghalaya; Highland Kayang, HoD, Botany, NEHU; PS Nongbri, former CCF,Meghalaya; SS Chaturvedi, Associate Prof., Environment Studies NEHU; VJJ Wallang, Associate Prof., Geology, St Anthony’s College and GL Kharkongor, Associate Prof., Geography, St Edmund’s College with DCF Social Forestry & Environment, Meghalaya as Member Secretary.
The term of both SEIAA and SEAC shall be for three years from the date of issue of the notification.
As per Environmental Impact Assessment Notification 2006, all states and Union territories are required to set up the mandatory SEIAA and SEA.
