The National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Bengaluru has entered into an agreement with the Meghalaya government to allow its students to undertake research activities in the State.
Law minister James PK Sangma facilitated the signing of the memorandum of understanding today for the PA Sangma Fellowship for Legal and Policy Research.
Besides providing a holistic experience on the current challenges of law and policy on ground to students, the partnership will also provide capacity building programs and training for law officers and other departments of the government.
“Starting from research and consultations to implementation and monitoring, governance is indeed a long process,” said Sangma at the event.
“This will be a great learning experience for the fellows because the transition they would have made from the classroom environment to understanding the ground realities of law and policy in implementation is something which is important,” he said.
Dr. Sudhir Krishnaswamy, Vice Chancellor of NLSIU, also highlighted the need for providing greater exposure to students, which will allow them to gain a practical and grounded experience for the future.
“We often have many ideas which we discuss. But I am highly encouraged by the fact that the Meghalaya government and James Sangma have taken active steps to translate important ideas into action,” he said.
“Such steps are important in bringing vibrance to the environment of education because it allows educational institutes to engage practically with the government on important policy matters,” he added.
Secretary Law Department Cyril V. Diengdoh, Dr. Nigam Nuggehalli, Registrar NLSIU and Dr. Sony Pellissery, Course Director Institute of Public Policy were also present at the event.
