Residents of the border area under Raid Marwet of Hima Mylliem, along with the local organisations, continued to protest today against the border settlement between Meghalaya and Assam, unhappy at the agreement handing control of property they want included in Meghalaya to the neighbouring state.
The agreement was signed on Tuesday in New Delhi between the two states Chief Ministers to resolve the dispute in six separate areas. However, demarcation by the Survey of India and ratification of the deal in Parliament is still pending.
Residents held a protest today in Maikhuli village, which will see a fish pond given over to Assam. The protestors held banners and placards denouncing the agreement. They urged Chief Minister
Conrad Sangma to properly consult with locals and traditional leaders before making such decisions. They also said that they are prepared to move the Supreme Court against the border deal if their feelings are not taken into consideration. The protestors also condemned Jirang MLA Sosthenes Sohtun and MDC Victor Ranee for giving their assent to the deal.
