A special POCSO court has convicted a former police officer, Nurul Islam, of raping two minor sisters in 2013. Sentencing will take place on Monday.
In 2013 Islam raped the two sisters at Ampati police station in South West Garo Hills. He first assaulted the 14-year-old sister on March 13 and 14 and then, on March 31, raped the older, 17-year-old sister at gunpoint.
It was following the latter incident that the girls’ father filed an FIR. In the complaint, the father said that Islam, a Sub-Inspector and in charge of the station at the time, had threatened to kill both the victims and frame them in criminal cases if they dared to inform anyone about the rapes.
He was convicted on Thursday here for offences under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act 2012 and the Indian Penal Code.
Special Public Prosecutor, Evalarisha Rynjah, said that the government is pushing for a maximum sentence of life imprisonment as well as a fine. The defendant, meanwhile, has asked the judge for minimum sentencing.
