Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said the decision to withdraw general consent to the CBI for investigation had been taken quite a long time ago.
“The decision wasn’t taken recently but had been done quite a long time ago,” he told media persons here today.
Meanwhile, former chief minister Dr. Mukul Sangma said that his party would have to look at the background of the circumstances leading to this decision.
He added that the government has to also look at what is best for the people when entrusting any investigating agency to probe into the alleged illegalities.
“The government must be responsive to any kinds of demand from the people. You have to have options whether the people will be accepting a particular decision of the government. When the government has to order an inquiry into alleged irregularities and if people don’t accept then the government has to give options,” Dr. Sangma said.
He also stated that CBI is one of the options and if not then even Special Investigation Team and other agencies can be called.
Meghalaya becomes the ninth state to join other states like Mizoram, Maharashtra, Punjab, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Kerala to withdraw general consent to the CBI for investigation.
With this decision, the CBI cannot carry out any investigation in the State without the State government’s permission.
