Rongrong MDC Rinaldo Ninja of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) filed his nomination papers for the post of Chairman of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) today.
A special session of the GHADC will be held on Friday to fill the vacancy. The post has been empty since Rakesh Sangma resigned to contest (and win) the Chief Executive Member position. However, Rakesh was forced to resign after intense protests across the Garo Hills.
The NPP and its alliance partners in the district council have nominated Gasuapara MDC Sengchim M Sangma to contest for the post.
The election of the Chairman will be conducted by West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Ram Singh at 11am.
There are 29 directly elected MDCs and one nominated MDC, Aldo A Sangma, from the ruling National People’s Party (NPP).
