Leader of Opposition and former Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma today accused the National People’s Party (NPP) of being obsessed with money and power.
Reacting to the ongoing protest against the election of Rakesh Sangma as the CEM of GHADC, the AITC leader said, “The situation that unfolded in Garo Hills following installation of Conrad Sangma’s brother-in-law Rakesh A Sangma as CEM, GHADC could have been avoided but for the party leadership’s obsession with power and money.”
Meanwhile, even as newly elected GHADC CEM, Rakesh Sangma decided to step down from his chair, protestors today greeted Chief Minister Conrad Sangma with black flags in Tura to protest against the election.
The chief minister was on his way to inaugurate the Chandmary artificial football turf in Tura when pressure groups and citizens raised black flags and shouted “Go Back” naming the chief minister.
On February 24 too, the chief minister was greeted with black flags while at Ampati in South Garo Hills.
Since the appointment of Rakesh, Garo Hills had endured several forms of protests for three weeks led by pressure groups to demand his removal as CEM. They have vehemently opposed the new CEM because, they claim, that he and his family do not follow Garo customs and traditions as they are more influenced by Rakesh’s father’s Nepali roots.
Meanwhile, the NPP led alliance in the GHADC has announced the nomination of Siju MDC, Albinush Marak to replace Rakesh.
Marak is currently the Deputy Chairman of the GHADC.
