The Meghalaya High Court has ordered contempt proceedings against Sunirmal Hajong, Executive Engineer, PWD for non-compliance with the directions of the court passed on December 6, 2021.
The order was passed today by the division bench of Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee and Justice Wanlura Diengdoh during hearing of a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by a lawyer A H Hazarika.
“Let a suo motu rule of contempt be issued against Sunirmal Hajong, Executive Engineer, PWD for non-compliance with the directions contained in the order dated December 6, 2021,” the High Court said.
The court also asked State government lawyer R Gurung to inform the Executive Engineer that the matter will be taken up on March 4.
It may be mentioned that on December 6, 2021 there was a serious dispute between Hazarika and the State government as to whether any attempt has been made to improve the condition of the road, particularly from Medhipara to Garobadha.
The government had informed that extensive repair works have been undertaken on the particular stretch; and also that for a substantial part of the year, the road is submerged following the rains or due to the overflowing Brahmaputra.
Sunirmal Hajong, Executive Engineer, PWD who has filed affidavits on the matter was directed to invite Hazarika to visit the road stretch in the course of the first fortnight of January, 2022, so that the present condition of the stretch of the road can be ascertained and photographs and reports in such regard filed in the High Court.
