Russia’s invasion of Ukraine may seem a million miles away but for some families in Meghalaya, the troubles in Eastern Europe are all too close to home.
There are at least three Meghalaya students who are now trapped in Ukraine – one from Ladpnar Rim in Eastern West Khasi Hills, one from Malki and another from Laitkor. These three study together at the Zaporizhzhia State Medical University.
Chief Minister Conrad Sangma tweeted today that he has requested the central government to ensure their, and other Indian citizens’, safe return.
“We are praying for everyone’s safety. May peace prevail,” he added.
Highland Post was able to speak to the father of student DL Mawlong, of Ladpnar Rim. Mawlong’s university is several hours south east of the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv. It is close to the disputed region in the east of the country as well as Russian-occupied Crimea.
Mawlong’s father, Medes Rani, told HP that the family had been able to speak with their daughter earlier in the day and that she was safe. Having other Meghalayans, and other Indian citizens, around is helping to keep their spirits up.
The students are trapped as no flights are getting into or departing from Ukraine’s airports due to the damage done by Russia to airport infrastructure and the risk to the aeroplanes.
The Indian embassy is trying to make other arrangements for their escape. The Meghalaya students are booked on a February 27 flight out of the country and they are hoping against hope that it is not cancelled.
