The ‘financial literacy week’ of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) commenced in Shillong today under the theme, “Go Digital Go Secure” to propagate financial education messages among the public across the country.
RBI, Shillong general manager and officer-in-charge, P. Gangte said over the years officials have been going to the villages, besides various blocks and district headquarters of the State to disseminate financial awareness messages by conducting Financial Literacy Camps (FLCs), town hall meetings, field level financial literacy events, etc.
Speaking at the programme, Gangte explained the main features of Digital Financial Services, including “Anywhere, Anytime Transactions”, “Interoperability” and “Building of transaction histories for meaningful utilization to improve access to credit and relevant financial services to various target groups”.
He also mentioned the financial inclusion measures being undertaken by the Government of India and the RBI through various policy measures.
The focus for this year will be on creating awareness about various aspects relating to convenience of digital transactions, security of digital transactions and protection to customers, he added.
State finance secretary, PK Agrahari attended the programme as the chief guest. Also present were N.Guite, General Manager, NABARD, State finance joint secretary Ramakrishna Chitturi.
Posters and leaflets in local languages besides English and Hindi were provided to banks and financial institutions for display in their premises and ATMs, distribution to their customers and public and for use during Financial Literacy Camps (FLCs) for wider dissemination.
Financial Literacy Centres of banks have also been instructed by RBI to conduct special FLCs throughout the state during the week.
In addition to other activities during the week, officials of RBI Shillong will participate in nine FLCs conducted by the banks in various locations of the State. They would also visit four RSETIs in Mawphlang, Tura, Nongstoiñ and Umran to sensitize their trainees.
