The election of Rakesh Sangma as the Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) has brought the entire Garo Hills region into an eerie silence as they responded to the two-day non-cooperation movement called by pressure groups.
Barring a few incidents of tyre burning people also stayed indoors with few vehicles seen in Tura. Government offices however, reported maximum attendance after orders were issued making their presence mandatory.
The protest was called by GSU, FKJGP, ADE, AYWO, FAF, NTDF, TSCF, GGU, NESO and NGEA.
Security was beefed up to ensure no untoward incidents take place.
Shops and commercial establishments remained completely shut throughout the timing of the protest in district headquarters.
