Former Secretary of the Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC), Kamol Marbaniang, who resigned from primary membership of the party last month, has expressed doubt that a single Congress MLA will be reelected at the next state elections in 2023.
Speaking to Highland Post today, Marbaniang said that the Congress under the leadership of Vincent Pala has turned into a corporate party.
He predicted that the five remaining Congress legislators will quit before the 2023 polls, making it extremely likely that the party will draw a blank in those elections.
In his resignation letter, Marbaniang had said that he feld “rejected” by the Congress after years of service to the party.
Today he accused Pala of ignoring him and other senior party workers from any decision making.
“There is no more acknowledgement of senior and loyal party workers who have worked hard for the party over the years and this is the reason everyone is leaving the party,” Marbaniang stated.
Congress used to be a party of the grassroots but has now lost its way and turned into the party of businessmen with no place for the common man, he added. “Why should the common people believe in the people from the business community to lead them when they know that they will be least bothered to reach out to the poor people at the grassroots level?”
Stating that people have lost trust in the Congress after most of the senior party functionaries left the party, Marbaniang described it as unlikely that he will ever rejoin the grand old party.
