Meghalaya today roll out precautionary doses against Covid-19 for frontline and healthcare workers as well as senior citizens with comorbidities in 57 centres across the State.
The booster dose drive is opened at 57 centres across the State and 37 centres are in the capital city Shillong.
Principal Secretary in the Health Department, Sampath Kumar said that the idea is to vaccinate all those vulnerable and for the 60 plus years age group door to door exercise is being done.
He said that in the next two weeks, the focus is to ensure all those eligible for the precautionary dose are covered. Citing possible reasons for low turn-out, the Principal Secretary said that people are still in holiday mood and are on leave. He also urged media to help them in spreading awareness.
India’s decision to administer the third dose comes amid the presence of the Omicron variant of the coronavirus, which is thought to be behind the rapid rise in new infections recorded nationwide over the last few days.
An estimated 1.05 crore healthcare and 1.9 crore frontline workers, and 2.75 crore co-morbid people in the 60-plus category is the estimated targeted population, Health Ministry sources said as the ramped up vaccination drive to increase the Covid protection umbrella kicked off — 17 days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi made the announcement on December 24.
