The conglomeration of NGOs that make up the All Garo Hills Joint Action Committee (AGHJAC) today met the Vice-Chancellor of North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Prabha Shankar Shukla at the varsity’s Tura campus over their demands made for improvement of the institute.
According to a press communiqué, the AGHJAC submitted a memo to the VC seeking the appointment of a qualified, preferably local, professor as Pro VC in charge of the Tura campus.
“This will ensure the person has better understanding about the welfare, needs and development of the students as well the staff of Tura campus. There are many non-teaching staff who are appointed on a contractual basis, serving for many years and their appointment must be regularized at the earliest,” said the AGHJAC.
They also demanded the filling up of vacant posts, like deputy registrar and assistant registrar, driver, LDA and other staffs on an immediate basis to enable the university to function smoothly.
“The blocks and departments which have been constructed in NEHU Tura are insufficient and there is a need for more buildings for each and every department. This needs to be initiated at the earliest. Further the university should give first preference to locals or Garo people as guest faculty,” they added.
The AGHJAC added that there has been a spike of Garo applicants in many departments for admission despite getting good grades who were not provided admission and needed immediate attention. They also asserted that the campus has been developing without proper planning and proper utilization of the land inside the campus was needed.
The AGHJAC members stated that they felt better after assurances were provided by the VC on working on their demands and felt it was a sign of good tidings.
