The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has recommended Rs 15 lakh as relief in cases human rights violation to people of different communities in Meghalaya, Mizoram and Tripura.
The recommendation was made after the Commission concluded its sitting for the three states in Shillong today.
NHRC member, Justice Mahesh Mittal Kumar informed at a press conference that officers of the three state governments have paid Rs 10.54 lakhs as per the recommendations of the Commission in some cases to the victims and the remaining Rs 46,000 would be disbursed soon.
Kumar said the Commission heard 19 cases which included those from Tripura (10), Meghalaya (6) and Mizoram (3),
Two cases pertaining to deaths of labourers in illegal mines in Meghalaya was heard by the Commission. It also asked the State to submit proof for the payment of Rs.3 lakh in a case of encounter death and Rs 5 lakh.
For Tripura, the Commission took up the case of non-distribution of food through PDS to Chakma people and a rape case of a minor by a para-military personnel and recommended payment of Rs 7 lakh to the victim.
The matters heard in the open hearing included non-receipt of the report cases; show cause notice cases; and compliance cases.
The Commission also held a discussion with NGOs/ HRDS and members of the Civil Society, during their interactions in which issues related to healthcare, SCS/STs, women, elderly and children were raised.
The Commission reiterated that the NGOs are actually eyes and ear of the Commission and they are true partners of the Commission in spreading awareness regarding promotion and protection of human rights.
