Former Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma yesterday hit out at the present National People’s Party-led state government arguing that Meghalaya is lacking governance because of the ruling coalition.
“We have been very candid and clear about the fact that there is a government but no governance. If you just pass through the roads, you can see illegalities. The situation is such that the High Court has lately intervened into these alleged illegalities that have been going on with impunity, with the patronage of the government. This is something which is going to damage and become disastrous for the state,” said Dr Sangma on the sidelines of a meeting held yesterday at Watregre in West Garo Hills.
The former CM has been busy with various programs after shifting his allegiance from the Congress to the Trinamool Congress (TMC). The meetings have aimed to inform supporters of the reasons for his and the 11 other MLAs’ departure from the Congress.
On the merger and their tours of the region, Dr Sangma said that these programmes would last for another two months at least so that they can inform all of their decision and seek out ways to bring the TMC to power after the 2023 state election.
“Those who are gathered are all former Congress leaders who have come forward to work with us. Simultaneously, at the grassroot level, party workers are working on a similar exercise. We are getting support from not only the former Congress workers but from other parties as well. We expect these mergers to be completed within the next 45-60 days,” he added while expressing confidence that the TMC flag will fly from every corner of the state in 2023.
Dr Sangma also informed that the party leadership is considering what steps to take in relation to a recent comment made by Deputy Speaker Timothy D Shira of the NPP. Shira had said that the TMC had promised Rs 5 crore to each MLA who joined the party, with a total of Rs 200 crore coming to the state unit of the TMC.
