Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong expressed utter disbelief that Meghalaya is among the least clean states in the country.
Recently, the Swachh Survekshan 2021 survey report ranked parts of Meghalaya among the lowest in terms of cleanliness.
Instead of accepting the findings or pledging to make the state cleaner, Tynsong rejected the report.
“I don’t believe it (the ranking). When they conducted the survey, perhaps they confined themselves to Motphran or Ïew Mawlong but they could not have surveyed the entire state, whether urban or rural areas,” he said. “Go to any village in the rural areas. Even here in Shillong, go to Mawkhar, Mission Compound, Jaiaw, Pohkseh or Nongthymmai and you will see the cleanliness.”
According the annual survey conducted for cleanliness, hygiene and sanitation released by the by the Union Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry on November 20, Shillong dropped from 353rd to 371st for cleanliness in cities with a population of between 1 and 10 lakh. The Shillong Cantonment area also ranked 60 out of 62 others nationwide, while East Khasi Hills was 562nd among districts, with West Garo Hills (623rd) and South Garo Hills (639th) even lower.
