As farmers celebrate the Centre’s decision to repeal the farm laws, Meghalaya Governor Satya Pal Malik has thanked the Prime Minister for the roll back.
During the farmer’s protest which went on for more than a year, the Governor did not refrain from lashing at the Central government. He had time and again demanded the PM to listen to the demands of the farmers and even declared that he was willing to step down from his post for backing the farmers’ agitation.
The Governor recently made strong comments in the media that nobody’s father has made him Governor. He also said that the Prime Minister has appointed him Governor and he will immediately resign if PM Modi asks him to and that he will keep raising his voice for farmers no matter what the consequences are.
Speaking over the phone from New Delhi, Malik said, “I am thankful to the PM for doing it and I would also congratulate the farmers who have carried out their long protest peacefully without resorting to any violence.”
Asked what should be the stand of the farmers going forward, Malik refused to make any further comments but had assured that he will continue to stand for the farmers.
In September, the Governor told the media here that people should know that he comes from a farmer’s background. “I was born in a farmer’s family and have done farming in my young days because my father died when I was only two years old. So I know their plight and I agree with their demands,” the governor had stated.
