Days after East Garo Hills police arrested two persons, one Nigerian and another from Nagaland, sustained interrogation has brought out further revelations on the extent of their crimes as well as pointed to a racket being operated by more gang members.
The arrested Nigerian, identified as Felix and the Naga woman, Khegoli were arrested from New Delhi and brought to East Garo Hills where they were remanded to five days of police custody.
“During preliminary investigation we found that several people from Meghalaya from various districts like Jowai, East Khasi Hills (Shillong), West Garo Hills ( (Tura), South Garo Hills (Baghmara), East Garo Hills (Williamnagar), Ribhoi (Nongpoh) and West Khasi Hills (Nongstoiñ) were also cheated in the same manner,” said Superintendent of Police, Bruno A Sangma.
Police further revealed that the Nigerian had many other gang members operating with him.
During investigation, one of the facebook accounts of the Nigerian was identified as Alex Williams/Alex James and his whatsapp number that was used in the fraud was revealed to be +447398279773.
Police have cautioned social media users from falling prey to such fraudsters while also asking anyone who has been a victim of online fraud to contact their nearest police station to lodge cases.
