A new wildlife beat office was inaugurated at Khaddum under the Narpuh Wildlife Sanctuary by Additional Principal Chief Conservator Forests and Chief Wildlife Warden, H C Chaudhary.
The Khaddum wildlife beat was constructed under the Compensatory Afforestation Fund Management and Planning Authority (Campa) and was inaugurated on October 23 in the presence of H. Lato, MFS, Divisional Forest Officer, Jaiñtia Hills Wildlife Division, S. Law, Range Forest Officer, Umkiang Wildlife Range, F. Passah, Range Forest Officer, Jowai Wildlife Range, Rangbah Shnong and Secretary of Khaddum Village, Rangbah Shnong of Lum Myrli.
Speaking at the programme, Chaudhary said that the beat office was constructed with an aim to strengthen protection of Narpuh Wildlife Sanctuary. Urging residents to cooperate in protection and conservation of wildlife and their habitat he said the department will try its best in finding ways to improve the livelihood of the people living in the fringe of the sanctuary by providing alternate livelihood activities like handloom, bee keeping, etc. and the Department will assist in branding the products of the local people.
Rangbah Shnong of Khaddum, Ruota Khawbung assured that the dorbar will take an initiative at the village level to make the people understand about the importance of conservation and protection of wildlife especially in putting an end to poaching.
Meanwhile, prizes were also given to winners of the drawing and painting competition on conservation of wildlife. Altogether 29 students from three schools took part in the competition.
