The Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) is a fine example of a house in disorder, state Congress Party working president Ampareen Lyngdoh has told Highland Post.
Responding to charges that the Congress is divided internally, Lyngdoh cited the campaigning for the upcoming by-elections, where MDA allies like the National People’s Party and United Democratic Party are viciously attacking each other.
“We have seen in Mawphlang how the UDP is lashing out at the NPP and, if that is not a house in disorder, then what is? They are government partners but they are bashing each other on the election platform,” she said.
Meanwhile, Lyngdoh said that she is happy that the Congress is in opposition in the state right now because there needs to be a strong counterweight to the government’s “oppression”.
“I think it is destiny for us to be in opposition. I’m not complaining and, come 2023, if things don’t change then there’s a need for a very vigilant opposition that can play a role as effectively and efficiently,” the East Shillong MLA said.
Stating that the opposition is the voice of the people, she said that the public should also support a candidate who keeps their promises because if they elect a candidate with money then, just as much as they pump in money during the election, they will spend their time recovering it afterwards.
“The public should be wise and watchful and vote with a conscience and not because of financial incentives,” she stated.
She also lambasted political parties who keep saying that the Congress party is in disarray.
“In 2023 you will see the exodus of many candidates from one party to another, so stop saying that it’s only the Congress that is disarray. We believe that as much as Congress is under pressure every political party is under pressure. It does not matter because this is an era of political uproar and every political party is facing the same pressure and there is much push and pull that will try to break a party,” she added.
