The Khasi Hills unit of the Garo Students Union (GSU) has demanded that the state government take strict action against erring drivers working for the state-owned Meghalaya Transport Corporation (MTC).
The GSU was referring to the September 29 Nongchram incident where eight people died after the bus they were travelling in careered off the road and into the river below. It is believed that the driver was intoxicated when the accident took place.
The GSU, while thanking the police, local people and Mongri Industries, which provided help in pulling the bus out of the river, said that drivers of MTC buses, sumos and other commercial vehicles are usually intoxicated while on duty as they receive free food and liquor from roadside hotels and dhabas.
“We urge the MDA government to impose strict actions against the irresponsible people or drivers. Such incautious driving may cause harm or bring loss of life and properties to mankind and nature as well,” the GSU said. “The government must suspend the licenses of such reckless drivers who violate the laws… We warn those hotels not to serve any intoxicants which may cause road mishaps in future.”
The pressure group also urged the transport authorities to monitor the condition of vehicles and improve the other requirements for safe transportation and enforce other laws.
