Though the opposition has made specific accusations relating to corruption in the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Ltd, the inquiry constituted to probe these irregularities has been issued terms by the state government that are too vague, leader of the opposition Dr Mukul Sangma said today.
Addressing a press conference here, the Congress leader criticised the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government for focusing the inquiry on issues like appointment in human resources and award of contracts when the opposition was focused on alleged irregularities in Saubhagya and the smart meter installation.
“You look at the terms of reference, it’s a joke,” Dr Sangma said, adding that they will utterly dilute the investigation.
The MDA’s junior partners were also keen for an inquiry, but Dr Sangma opined that this was merely for show; now that the inquiry is in place these political parties are all quiet.
“Is the inquiry going to yield the outcome that is required? No, it will not,” he stated.
The terms of reference for the independent inquiry into allegations of corruption and other irregularities in the MeECL are to look into manpower issues, like appointment and other irregularities within human resources. It will also look into allegations of power theft as well as the overall losses the utility faces.
It will look into work done over the last 10 years, since the inception of MeECL.
