Irked by regular flash floods, which have gravely affected the people of Ri-Bhoi, the Federation of Khasi, Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) has demanded that the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) widen the existing drain along NH-40 in order to make it capable of handling the large amount of rainfall during the monsoon.
The FKJGP has expressed its deep concern over the issue on the Jorabad-Umiam stretch as it takes mere minutes during a heavy shower for the highway to flood.
Speaking to the media persons, FKJGP unit president, Lui Star Lyngdoh, said that this is a serious issue that needs to be addressed by NHAI.
“We have seen from time to time that whenever heavy rain lashes the road, within half an hour it is covered by flood water, which sometimes goes on to damage homes and property and causes travellers to become stuck,” Lyngdoh said.
