The state’s Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department has warned against the wanton killing of pet cats and dogs and the use of these animals as food.
In an order dated September 9, Principal Secretary GHP Raju reminded the public that killing of stray or pet dogs is a crime under the Indian Penal Code and Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1960.
Killing of dogs for food is also illegal under the Food Safety and Standards Act 2006 and 2011 regulations, he said.
