Various groups from Rongjeng in East Garo Hills have written to the deputy commissioner seeking an investigation into the construction of the upcoming Rongjeng Community Degree College which according to them is not as per the detailed project report (DPR).
The GSU, ASWA, GSMC and RYWA have alleged that the upcoming institution is being built differently from what is supposed to be in the DPR and expressed their disappointment over the delay in the completion of the project, estimated at over Rs 10 crores.
The groups have also questioned the engineer as well as the contractor on various changes that have been made from the original report.
“The DPR shows the building to be of three-storied along with a boy and girls hostel. However the construction does not match the estimate. Further the doors to the boys and girl’s hostel are made of plywood and will not last,” the pressure groups said in the complaint.
They also pointed to one floor from the entire RCC building not being constructed at all and had earlier appealed for it to be done. They were apparently assured by the engineer and contractor that they would do their best in getting it done.
Meanwhile, the contractor in question however has denied any wrong doing and clarified that the changes were done by the education department. According to him, the DPR has been changed by the department concerned and the construction has come as per the new plan.
“The NGOs should question the department concerned. We have done the work as has been given to us. In this day and age of RTI, I would be a fool to not do work as has been prescribed. They need to check their facts,” said the contractor.
Meanwhile the pressure groups have said that they would be holding a meeting with various stakeholders on the issue and seek answers from the government.
