Former Home Minister RG Lyngdoh is “actively” considering a return to politics, he told Highland Post today.
“There is a lot of pressure for me to return to politics. A lot of people have talked and requested me to do so and I’m actively considering it because I just can’t ignore their request and with so much happening in the state,” he said.
One potential obstacle could be his health, however, as the former minister has had a few issues over the years and will look to get a green signal from his doctors before returning to the rough and tumble of politics.
Lyngdoh’s sister Ampareen is a senior member of the state Congress Party and ‘Bob’, as he is fondly known, said that the new leadership team in the party holds hope of better days and he wants to stick with the Congress.
“I believe that whatever you do, you have to earn it, you don’t fight for it, and only time will tell if, after joining the party, I will even get a party ticket or not,” he said.
Lyngdoh downplayed speculation that he will opt to contest the South Shillong seat at the next elections, saying that it is far too early to say anything definite.
Congress has been defeated heavily in this seat since it was created in its current form before the 2013 elections. However, Lyngdoh is still remembered positively for the strong line he took against militancy while he was Home Minister and this could count in his favour.
