Amid the hue and cry over the recent police killing of former HNLC leader Cherishterfield Thangkhiew, the State police chief has applied for leave.
However, speaking to newsmen here today, Home Minister Lahkmen Rymbui said that the file related to the leave application of Director General of Police (DGP) R Chandranathan is yet to reach him.
“He has applied for leave citing personal reasons. However, the file is yet to reach me,” Rymbui said, adding that he would have to examine the file before taking any decision.
It remains to be seen if the State government would approve the leave application of the DGP.
If the government approves the leave application, the next senior most IPS officer of the State may be appointed as acting DGP.
There were demands from various quarters for the suspension of the DGP and two Superintendents of Police (SPs) following the killing of Thangkhiew at his residence on August 13.
Various pressure groups especially Ka Sur Ki Nong Mawlai have said that the three police officials should be suspended from service since the judicial enquiry has been set up to probe the killing of the former HNLC leader in an alleged encounter.
They also said that suspension of the three police officials would ensure free and fair enquiry and prevent tampering of evidence and records.
