The state government is unnecessarily provoking the people of Mawlai by issuing the group called ‘Sur Ki Nong Mawlai’ a show cause notice over its activities since the death of former militant leader Cherishterfield Thangkhiew last month, a pressure group leader said today.
One of the leaders of the group, Donboklang Kharlyngdoh, also president of the Hynñiewtrep Youths Council’s Mawlai unit, said, “The government itself has decided to form a peace committee. But what peace committee do you want by provoking the Sur Ki Nong Mawlai?”
The show cause notice by the East Khasi Hills district administration is in relation to the holding of two public events last month despite Covid-19 restrictions being in place.
Kharlyngdoh also informed that the Sur Ki Nong Mawlai had started, on August 31, a campaign to hand over letters to the 35 MLAs of Khasi-Jaiñtia Hills to pressure the government to suspend the police personnel involved in the killing of Thangkhiew.
“We will write another letter wherein they will have to show whether they have the political will to take up the matter in the cabinet or in the Assembly,” he added. “We want to see in them the spirit of love for their indigenous tribe.”
Meanwhile, a similar group called, ‘Ka Sur Ehrngiew Ki Nong Upper Shillong-Mylliem’ was formed today to hold protest against the killing of the ex-HNLC leader.
