The All Meghalaya Karbi Association (AMKA) has expressed deep concern on the re-occurrence of tensions in Block-II area of Ri-Bhoi district due to border dispute. It also urged pressure groups of both Meghalaya and Assam not to disturb the peace and tranquility of the area.
“We are deeply concerned about the reported clash between NGOs members from Meghalaya with Assam police personnel where some Khasi youth were reportedly beaten up by the Assam police. We condemn such acts of atrocity committed on our fellow citizens of the State,” AMKA publicity secretary Keson Klein said today.
The AMKA also strongly objected to certain speeches and comments in social media which are against the Karbi community of Meghalaya.
“The Karbis are peace loving people and law abiding people and had never interfered or instigated any group to create tensions in the border. Therefore, issuing threats and posting racial and communal slurs against our community has no basis and can never be accepted,” AMKA said.
Regarding the ongoing border talks between Meghalaya and Assam, AMKA said that the people of two states should give chance to the two state governments to solve the dispute amicably.
“We therefore urge NGOs of both states not to disturb the peace and tranquility of the area by demonstrating show of strength and dominance at the disputed area as this will bring negative impacts on the minds of the border residents. In this regards, the AMKA have been in touch with Karbi Anglong based NGOs, especially the Karbi Students Association (KSA) and urged them to maintain peace and tranquility and to see that the age-old coexistence of Khasis and Karbis shall continue as it was before,” AMKA said.
