BJP national secretary Arun Singh today claimed that he was not aware of the purported statement made by BJP cabinet minister Sanbor Shullai that Meghalayans should be encouraged to eat more beef.
“I have not heard that. I have been here for the last two days and I have not heard,” Singh said. “Definitely we are not in favour (of encouraging people to eat beef).”
Today, Shullai’s office shot off two ‘clarifications’, one saying that his statement on beef had been “highly exaggerated and misunderstood” by the press.
What the minister meant, he said, was that the BJP would not interfere in the eating habits of the people of Meghalaya.
His other clarification was with regards to him being quoted as agreeing with the statement of Mizoram’s MP to “kill them all” with regards to the Mizoram-Assam border clash last week.
Shullai described this as “totally false” and said that he has no right to comment on the dispute between two other states. He had only commented on the Meghalaya-Assam dispute and the need for it to be resolved amicably.
