Days after the bloody border clash between Mizoram and Assam and the intrusion by Assam police into Iongkhuli village of Meghalaya, Lok Sabha MP, Vincent H. Pala has said that inter-state border clashes have been on the rise in the North East under the present the BJP government in Assam led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
Pala today wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi stating that inter-state border conflicts have started to increase and also “taken a much more aggressive turn” under the BJP government in Assam.
“It has been observed that for reasons best known to the present BJP-led government of Assam, such conflicts have not only been on the rise, but have also taken a much more aggressive turn,” Pala said in his letter.
Pala also said that the recent border conflicts in the North East have once again threatened the peace and stability of the region.
According to him, all states of the North East have a long boundary dispute with Assam except for Tripura and Manipur.
Pala also said that disputes over land, forest resources and ethnic clashes can be seen between Assam and states like Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh creating a sense of fear, insecurity and alarm among the residents of these border areas.
The Shillong MP also sought the immediate intervention of Prime Minister Modi for establishing cordial relations between the neighbouring states and to resolve their boundary disputes.
“On behalf of the peace-loving people of Meghalaya, I sincerely urge you to address this issue at the earliest. The progress of the region has long been fought for long and hard and it would be a matter of great regret to let that wither away,” Pala said.
