The Pedaldoba unit of the Garoland State Movement Committee (GSMC) has written to the Chief Minister, Conrad Sangma, demanding the reopening of schools, colleges and universities as well as churches within the state despite the spike in Covid-19 cases.
In their letter to the CM, the GSMC said that parents and students are suffering due to the lockdown and are still having to shell out money for education.
“Parents need to pay monthly fees and the students have been goofing off their times of learning and are losing their proficiency. Most private school authorities are facing a fund crunch to pay their teachers and this has caused tremendous consternation,” said chairman, Rimjen Sangma.
Sangma questioned the need to keep schools closed despite the state being the worst performer in terms of education in the country.
He felt that the matter was serious and for a better educational future more infrastructure, facilities and proper school buildings with adequate facilities was a must improve all-around quality of school education in the state.
The closing of churches, Sangma said, was censorious to the people of the state and detrimental to the society. He added that its closure had obliterated tranquillity within the region and urged the state government to ‘start off on the wrong foot’ for the betterment of the people of the state.
